SUNNY MADEN, PRESIDENT OF CASH/PCR, NAMED TO GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL

Governor Davis names members to the State Council on Developmental Disabilities.

SACRAMENTO -- Governor Gray Davis today announced the appointments of Sunny Maden, Peter Mendoza, Kathryn Nack, Mark Switzer and Sue Wakerley, and the reappointments of Sherri Martin, Ralph Skoner and Robin Wall as members of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Ms. Maden, 61, of Covina, serves as a member of the State of California Department of Developmental Services Restructuring Committee and is a board member of the Parents Coordinating Council at the Lanterman Development Center. She also serves as President of the California Association of State Hospital Parents Councils for the Retarded. Ms. Maden is also a member of the board of directors for the South Hills Escrow Corp.

Ms. Martin, 44, of Rescue, serves on the Developmental Disabilities Council, having first been appointed in 1998. She is the sole proprietor of Master Business Services, which specializes in account receivable management and bookkeeping. Ms. Martin formerly served as an assistant vice president at Union Bank of California and was an assistant manager and escrow officer at High Valley Escrow.

Mr. Mendoza, 34, of San Anselmo, was nominated by the Senate Committee on Rules. He serves as a Community Service School Resource Officer for the Ross Police Department and is a Consultant and Sensitivity Trainer. Mr. Mendoza is a member of the California Coalition for Equal Access, which organizes community agencies and disabled persons to respond to OSA Title 24 regulatory changes. He formerly served as a volunteer Crime Prevention Officer, where he worked with police departments in Marin County to educate merchants, residents and the general public about crime prevention techniques. Mr. Mendoza has also served as a member of the Marin County Paratransit Coordinating Council, San Francisco Physically Disabled Quorum and the Golden Gate Transit Advisory Committee on Services for Persons with Disabilities.

Ms. Nack, 76, of Pasadena, is the regional vice president of HMC Architecture Group. She also served as the secretary of the board of directors for Villa Esperanza, which serves developmentally disabled persons from birth through senior years. In 1989, Ms. Nack received the Governor's Committee for the Handicapped Outstanding Service Award. She has been involved in public life for 20 years, formerly serving as the Mayor of Pasadena and as president of the Pasadena School District Board of Education. Ms. Nack was a partner of Nack and Sunderland, an engineering firm in Pasadena, for more than 20 years. In 1995, she was a presidential appointee to the White House Aging Conference. She also serves on the California Commission on Aging.

Mr. Skoner, 48, of Corona, serves on the Developmentally Disabled Council, having been appointed in 1998. He is active in the self-advocacy movement for persons with developmental disabilities.

Mr. Switzer, 46, of Walnut Creek, serves on the Developmental Disabilities Council for Contra Costa County. He also serves a member of Dynamics Futures Consumer Board and People First of Contra Costa County.

Ms. Wakerley, 48, of Vacaville, has 15 years experience in program planning and development, advocacy, and training on behalf of individuals with disabilities. She serves as the Program Director for the Upper Solano Association for Retarded Citizens and Positive Approach for Consumer Education. Ms. Wakerley formerly served as the Executive Director United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay.

Ms. Wall, 68, of Long Beach, was nominated by the Senate Committee on Rules. She is a former teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District where she taught elementary students for more than 30 years. Ms. Wall is a member of Operation Jumpstart, where she is engaged in mentoring a Latino High School Student for a four-year period. She is also a member of the Special Olympics Boosters Club and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Wall earned a bachelor of arts degree from San Jose State University.

The State Council on Developmental Disabilities is a federally-funded independent state agency established in federal and state law to assist in planning, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Members do not receive a salary. These positions do not require Senate confirmation.
